SURROUND completed a significant semantic technology project (AUD $1 Million) in 2021 for the Department of Industry, Science, Energy, and Resources (BRII Challenge). The SOP was used for the auto-classification of electronic records (ERs) for the National Archives of Australia. The project successfully achieved the objectives to:
- generate machine-readable regulations for automating the processing of ERs
- provide comprehensive ER search and discovery to users
- automate the classification of billions of ERs
- automate the sentencing of ERs to accurately determine whether (1) they are critical to the preservation of Australia’s cultural heritage, and must be retained; or (2) if they may be safely disposed of, when disposal should take place.
The relevant features and capabilities of the SOP for the National Archives of Australia include:
- multi-dimensional contextual awareness (the ability to observe knowledge)
- knowledge governance across existing and future knowledge
- advanced analytics and ML
- high performance task and process automation
- decision support (including traceable explanations using Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI))
- compliance assessment and auditing
